[UNVRS] (pronounced Universe) nightclub in San Rafael was re-built, remodelled and rebranded into the world’s first “hyperclub”

The unique space on an Ibiza hillside, has evolved over the years into a landmark property. Previously listed as the world’s biggest nightclub by the Guinness World Book of Records even before its makeover, the architectural transformation from nightclub to the world’s first “hyperclub” is still inspiring awe and curiosity among visitors and industry insiders alike.
Since the early 1970’s when it started out as a restaurant, this forward-thinking venue has set the bar for Ibiza’s most significant transformations in entertainment and architecture. The aircraft hangar-like structure of the building has a 25-meter high ceiling that was built in the 90s to meet nightclub sector building regulations. Open-air venues needed to cover dance floors prompting major renovations to what was then known as KU Club. Today, the roof structure can accommodate large-scale production rigs. Back in the days of Ku, it may have been considerably pared-back in comparison to the current design, but that didn’t stop the likes of Grace Jones dancing naked at one of its parties and Freddie Mercury and James Brown performing there.

The visionary behind the multi-million investment into the reimagined [UNVRS] is Yann Pissenem, Owner, Founder & CEO of The Night League, Ushuaïa Entertainment, Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa Ibiza. Hollywood actor and friend Will Smith lent his support with the club’s promotion on a global scale. The gigantic construction of 6,500 m² re-built under Yann’s supervision over the past couple of years features rooftop solar panels, intelligent lighting and the best sound-proofing money can buy. The original “Dome” with its broad expanses of geometric shaped glass has been upgraded with a new design element. The central sculpture known as “The Tree of Life” with surrealist design curates a futuristic take on a UFO.
From the outside, [UNVRS] embraces the timeless aesthetic of traditional Ibizan buildings. A whitewashed facade with flat roof and natural stone walls nods to the island’s architectural soul. Once inside, the space sets a different tone for wild nights and chilled mornings. Industrial style is used to suit the purpose of the space. Vast, raw, and mimicking huge factories and warehouses, with exposed pipes, concrete flooring and brutalist corridors . A display of plant-life built into the design softens the final look, bringing a sense of tranquility, which can be felt during the crack of dawn.

Through 12 metre soaring glass windows the terrace captures a show of DJ sessions revealing sunrise views behind. The main room resembles an entertainment arena with large stage, incredible infrastructure, brutalist corridors, mirrored spaces and surrealist lounges, blending concrete and steel. At the forefront is human immersive exploration through lighting, sound and state-of-the-art technology. [UNVRS] aims to create a multi-sensory experience, with interactive floors, holograms, and a sound system that vibrates throughout the body. Designed with purpose, to deliver hyper-customized and fully interchangeable productions, the transformation here is significant.
At [UNVRS], each toilet boasts its own unique concept. Taking influences such as sci-fi and retro-futurism, each space contributes to a larger narrative. Not only a rest stop; rather a memorable visual experience thoughtfully designed to leave a lasting impression. Every element of the makeover has been uniquely crafted. Door handles, ceiling lights, seating and the DJ booth were either commissioned from designer studios or handmade by skilled artisans. The design’s essence blends Haussmann elegance, sci-fi surrealism and organic geometry, resulting in an atmosphere that feels timeless.

Guests can feel the buzz on a variety of terraces and distinct spaces including a zero-gravity chamber for performances, a biomorphic bar with 3D-printed structures and a skybridge connecting different levels. The Wild Comet is a hidden micro-club designed to transform the toilet area into a fully-functional and unforgettable dance space. For chilling out afterwards there’s a space dedicated to just that with vistas of Ibiza Town. There are underground VIP tunnels, private areas, booths, and an outdoor terrace linked by tunnels designed for seamless exits and discreet entrances. The evolution and architectural journey of a quiet hillside in San Rafael, into an iconic landmark certainly has an otherworldly effect.
